This gown dates to the Civil War era and was recently acquired from a private estate collection in central Connecticut. The gown is one piece in its construction and is fashioned of a brown silk with a two tone blue striped silk running down either side of the front. The gown is stitched fully by hand, seams piped around the neckline and sleeves, with the top sleeves in layered boxed pleating, sleeves in massive bishop fullness, with the bottom in boxed pleats and a cuff which hooks closed with a hand hammered hook and eye and a cuff trimmed with the two tone blue silk. Knit covered buttons trim the front with hooks enclosing the front from throat to bottom, the rear has a double draw string which has been tacked into place and the ends but if released it could be adjusted to fit the wearer. The condition of this piece is showroom new pristine. Measures 44 / 36 with 57 inches in its length and a bottom sweep of 120 inches around.
